It's not easy for anywhere in New York City to feel quaint without feeling like a dive, but Little Town Union Square strikes that balance. If you're looking for an NYC birthday party that's warm and inviting without veering into small and sad territory, Little Town is your venue.
It's hard not to feel comfortable with this much polished woodwork around. The space isn't no-frills, but classic and classy like a brewpub should be, even the flat screens are framed in wood. Plenty of high-top tables and spots at the big bar, and the many, many bottles of beer and spirits at the bar and elsewhere will remind you why you came in the first place.
The food menu is solid, and the beer menu is even better. Pair apps like Hawthorne Valley meats & cheeses, toasted goat cheese & honey, or pretzel crusted chicken fingers with larger plates like wings, burgers, or fried oysters, then wash it all down with any number of excellent New York beer choices, all nicely organized by type. All the names that tell you your're dealing with a serious brewpub are there; Blue Point, Brooklyn, Ithaca, Six Point- just try them all, you can't go wrong.
There's no question you want plenty of food and drink for your birthday party, but that doesn't mean it has to be either vodka bombs and nachos or martinis and food you can't pronounce. Little Town Union Square is food that you know and love with an upscale slant, and a local beer list to match. An NYC birthday party at Little Town hits that middle ground that's just the right mix of drunken and genteel.
